You might think it’s difficult. It’s not.
See that 650S above? Notice that the “grille” (aka the carbon bits) swoop downwards at about a 30º then 45º angle, to form a license-plate area.
This is a P1. Notice that its colored portion does NOT swoop downwards, and that its license plate area is carbon fiber. Also, the P1 has side carbon vents on the front bumper. The 650S doesn’t.
From the back and sides, you should be able to tell. The P1 is more cab-forward than the 650S.
This is a P1. The one below is a 650S. Notice how the P1 appears to be longer behind the cabin than the 650S? The P1 also will have an recessed area on the side, often accented in carbon fiber and with little winglets on the doors. The 650S has one large air intake behind the door on each side.
And in case you somehow have trouble with the back, the P1 has one large central exhaust and contoured taillights:
While the 650S has two exhausts and a pair of stacked, horizontal LEDs on each side.
So now you know. Go around annoying your friends with your new knowledge. (thanks to TheHondaBro for inspiration)

Wait, how did I inspire you?

Can people really not tell them apart? They look generally the same, but not THAT close.

I was gonna say the same thing. The P1 looks like an entirely new car while the 650S looks like the updated model of the MP4-12C. Not that that’s a bad thing but they are definitely different cars.

True. But non-US P1s don’t have orange reflectors, so I didn’t use them as a distinguishing point.

On the 650S Spider review Patrick wrote, he said someone asked if it was a P1.

From the front, the easiest way to tell is by the two hood vents :P
